Helping Students Manage Stress
Board exams are an important milestone in any student’s life and all 10th standard CBSE and GSEB students prepare diligently for these exams throughout the year. As the board exam results have a direct impact on the child’s further studies, they look forward to the exam days. As equally as they are eager about the exams, students also take in a lot of stress and anxiety about these tests and their subsequent results. Some amount of stress is good as it prompts the student to study more and work harder. However, when the stress takes a toll on the kid, mentally and physically, it is time for the parents and teachers to help with stress management in students.
The time period of the board examinations and the months leading up to them are ones filled with tension and anxiety for students. They worry constantly about their preparation, their study load, competition from their peers and so on. Parents, teachers and coaching institutes can make use of the following stress management techniques for students to help them overcome these difficult days:
- Don’t pressurize them: A very crucial step to help with stress management in students is that there should not be any extra pressure on them. As it is, the students are already under a lot of pressure, so family and friends should take extra care as to not put more burden on them, thus resulting in rising stress levels. Parents are also equally tensed about their child’s board exams and in some ways end up putting more pressure on their wards.
- Be there for them: During the exam period, students are neck-deep in studies and have time for nothing else. They tend to neglect their diet and health. This can add to their stress levels so parents should be there for them and ensure that they eat properly and take adequate rest while preparing for their board exams. The calming presence of their loved ones can help a lot in coping with the stress management in students.
- Motivate them: An important way in which parents/guardians can help students preparing for their board exams deal with their stress is by motivating them. This can be done in many ways like listening out their worries and offering solutions, giving them motivational tips and most importantly, creating a positive environment at home.
- Let them take a break: While the students will be mostly with their books during their study holidays, parents should let them take a break once in a while. They can catch up with their friends, eat out or go for a movie. Such breaks are necessary as it helps the students de-stress and get back to their studies with renewed energy.
